Just wanted to say I picked up this sandbox game on Saturday morning and have not been able to put it down since. Having grown up in the 'wild west' I can tell you it really reminds me of home - they got it just right. The detail to the world is amazing, the voice acting is perfect, the physics is phenomenal, and the atmosphere is great.
My only complaint so far (besides a lack of sleep), is that I don't want to do the main storyline because I've been having too much fun hunting down bandits and exploring the game world. If you like 'immersive rp' and/or westerns, I highly recomment this one.
Giving it a 9.8/10 :-)
Later Partners!

I'm thinking of picking this up, I heard it's like GTA in the wild west, is that true?

I can't say 100% since I've never played GTA. In one of the reviews I've read however it was described as an "update to the GTA engine", so probably you're right.
I've not stolen any horses or run over any pedestrians, but I could easily see the similarities! It's very authentic to the genre (not sure about how closely it emulates the real wild west), and its quite brutal in places. Women are treated poorly, lots of nasty cussin', bloody murders and drunkin' brawls, that sort of thing.
If you like that gritty feeling, you'll probably love this.

So... the idea is to ride around and do the occasional ride-by. Picking up floosies with ankle's winking seductively and such?

Actually your character is a married man so no fooling around (at least for my good guy)! You can (if you choose) go the evil route and do the ride-by shootings, or run around the desert killing folks for their money, etc. You can even wear a bandanna to disguise yourself if you like. I'm playing more of the lawman kind of character, although I will probably try the game a second time and go evil just to see how the game changes.

I really fancy this title, but my lack of game-playing lately has held me back so far. That and not being able to decide which platform. GTA4 was followed by exclusive (for a period) episodes for the 360, which have only recently become available for PS3 repackaged with the original game. I haven't read anything myself, but anyone else know if there are any plans for exclusive for the 360 episodes for RDD too?

There is a major co-op expansion coming for both platforms. The only exclusive thing I've heard of is a free PS3-only add-on you can get when you join the Rock Band Social Club from in-game. I'd imagine there's something similar for XBox users (perhaps someone else can confirm?).
What I would REALLY like to see is this title for PC. I rarely play PS3 games because the graphics and controls are just not as good as the PC. Although I do think this title has one of the best console control setups I've seen - the graphics are just not as good as I would like - there are some beautiful vistas in the game that need better hardware!

I have it for the PS3 and it is a great game. the format of the game will be familiar to anyone who has played GTA but it is isnt GTA. its like playing through most of your favourite western movies. i would recommend it to anyone.
At this point i have not tried the online aspect of the game as the single player storyline is very good.
hopefully a few of the game mechanics (like dead eye targeting) will be carried over to the next GTA game to revitalise that series.
One final point to mention is that the xbox version is in full HD and the PS3 isnt. there is an article on eurogamer; i cant see that much difference between the two. Ultimately who cares its an immersive and fun game.

Hey Vor, let me know when you're ready to try out the online stuff. I like you haven't touched it yet because I'm still enjoying the single player game so much (hunting boars right now.. damn things are hard to find!). And I should warn you now.. I am a lousy FPS player .. ;-)
Are you planning on picking up the co-op expansion? I can see lots of potential for that as well.
Cheers,

Was just reading a review of the multi-player aspect of RDR and found this description:
"Finally, there’s the multiplayer component. Red Dead Redemption’s unique selling point in this respect is its ‘Free Roam’ system. Free Roam acts as a kind of lobby, adversarial sandbox, and cooperative campaign all rolled into one, and is your first port of call for multiplayer. The game automatically places you into a match where the entire single player world is at your fingertips and up to 15 other players are placed in there with you. From here you can do your own thing; be it completing various quests as you would in single player and killing any players you come across, forming posses by teaming up with your fellow players, or entering a more traditional game type (Team Deathmatch, FFA, variations on Capture the Flag (called ‘Grab the Bag’), etc.)."
Sounds almost like a mini-mmo! I wonder if you can set up a private instance! Also would be great if you could play some of the mini-games with other players.

You can set up a private instance for yourself and invited friends, but alas the mini games are single player only.
One thing to mention is that most people treat public free roam as a free for all,so watch out if you are going to clear gang hide-outs.There's nothing worse than being in a shootout with banditos only to get bushwhacked by an ignorant varmit with the manners of a dead skunk...

Yes I experienced the love of online last night. It would be better if they spawned you away from the spot you died at when someone kills you. Seems to lead to some spawn camping as it is now. I did try the solo mode and it seems like a good way to level up your character a bit before going into full online mode.
I finished the main storyline as well last night and it was very western! Not sure if I loved or hated it but it certainly envokes some emotion. ;-)

I plumped for the PS3 version in the end :) Only a couple of sessions in single player so far, but great fun. I look forward to get shot, a lot, in multiplayer soon :)

we can always try to set up a few impromptu legends online games, and do a few gang hideouts and deathmatches.

So I've been playing some red dead redemption online and the PKers haven't been that bad. The key for me so far has been to form a posse as soon as I enter the game. When someone tries to PKill me I find a good open spot (like the top of a hill) with some rock cover and slaughter them from a distance.. I find cover to be very very useful in the open world.
